How Does OnlyFans Pay You? Payouts Explained From Its Terms

OnlyFans sends your earnings straight to the payout method you choose. Here is what its Terms of Service say about that route, quoted line by line, including the holds and deductions most guides skip.

    In short

OnlyFans collects every fan payment through an approved payment provider, keeps your share in your account balance, and pays it out to the method you picked once you meet the minimum. Its Terms also allow refunds, chargebacks, reviews and tax problems to hold or reduce a payout.

How this guide was made: Nocturnal Talent wrote it with AI tools, and every fact in it is checked against the sources it links to.

OnlyFans pays you itself, into a payout method you pick when you open your creator account. The OnlyFans Terms of Service, last updated August 2024, say a creator must "Select a method ("Payout Option") for us to transfer Creator Earnings to you". A fan pays, a payment provider OnlyFans approves processes it, and your share waits in your account balance until you withdraw it. If you're still weighing whether a dark aesthetic suits a paid page at all, start with whether goth is a good OnlyFans niche.

Setting up the account that gets paid

The same sign-up list asks you to "Add a bank account, payment details for your bank account, or a payment method". If you're registered for VAT in the UK, it also asks for your UK VAT number. The same sign-up list asks for ID and photos, covered in how OnlyFans verification works.

One line in the payout section tells you who holds those details:

Except for Payout Options by direct bank transfer, we do not store the data you disclose when you register your Payout Options with a payment provider.

Read plainly, OnlyFans stores your payout details only when you choose direct bank transfer. With any other option, what you register sits with the payment provider. The payout method is one step of sign-up; the rest is in how to start an OnlyFans.

What a fan's payment turns into

The Terms build the money side out of a few defined words. A "Creator Interaction" covers a subscription, a pay-per-view payment and "any other interaction or payment between a User and a Creator's account or Content, including direct messages". A "Fan Payment" is "any payment related to a Creator Interaction". So a subscription, a pay-per-view unlock and a paid message all follow the same payout rules. Subscriptions, pay-per-view and paid messages all count as Fan Payments, so it helps to plan goth content ideas for each of those.

You decide what those cost. "Creators are solely responsible for determining any pricing applicable to Creator Interactions." Prices show and are charged in USD, and sales tax goes on top for the fan: "Fan Payments are exclusive of Indirect Sales Tax, which shall be added at the current rate as applicable to Fan Payments." Subscriptions are taken as periodic payments, and everything else is taken immediately.

Then the section headed "Creator payouts" opens with two sentences:

All Fan Payments will be received and processed by a third-party payment provider we approve. Our Fee is calculated as 20% of the total Fan Payment and will be deducted from each Fan Payment.

What reaches you has its own name. "Creator Earnings" means "the portion of a Fan Payment payable to a Creator pursuant to these Terms of Service after deducting all fees and applying all relevant tax laws". The Contract between Fan and Creator, which governs every purchase from the fan's side, says the same thing in other words: the company "is also authorised to deduct the FIL Fee, to pay out Creator Earnings, and to pay applicable referral payments."

So the fee comes off each payment as it's processed, and your balance only ever shows your share.

When the balance can leave your account

    Two sentences set the conditions:

Creator Earnings will only be available for withdrawal when reflected in your OnlyFans account. To withdraw Creator Earnings from your OnlyFans account, your account balance must meet the minimum payout amount requirement.

So the earnings have to show in your account first, and the balance has to reach the minimum. The Terms text gives neither the minimum figure nor how long a payment takes to appear.

The next lines matter if your bank isn't in dollars. "All Fan Payments and Creator Earnings are transacted in USD. Your bank or e-wallet company may charge currency conversion or other fees." OnlyFans says it doesn't "control currency exchange rates, banking charges, or e-wallet provider charges" and is "not responsible for paying such charges". Any conversion cost lands with you and your bank.

What can shrink or hold a payout

Refunds and chargebacks come first, in the payout section itself:

If a Fan successfully seeks a refund or chargeback from their credit card provider of a Fan Payment, we may deduct an amount equal to the Creator Earnings portion of the refunded or chargedback amount.

Fans, for their part, agree not to make "unjustified chargeback requests", and OnlyFans may suspend or delete a fan's account over a refund or chargeback made in bad faith.

Holds sit further down, under "Our rights and obligations". OnlyFans may act "without warning or Notice and for as long as is necessary to review the relevant facts".

During that time it may "pause Fan Payments which would have been due during the suspension period" and "withhold any part of your Creator Earnings".

The triggers are a serious or repeated breach of the Terms, an attempt or threat to breach them with serious consequences, or a suspicion that earnings "result from unlawful or fraudulent activity, either by you or by the Fan who made the Fan Payment resulting in the Creator Earnings."

That last clause means a hold can start with a fan's fraud, not only yours.

If the review confirms a trigger, OnlyFans may "treat any part of your Creator Earnings as forfeited". It says it "will Notify you when we take any such action and will provide a statement of reasons why."

You then have six months from that notice to dispute it. A forfeiture goes through the OnlyFans Complaints Policy, and an account termination through the Appeals Policy.

Two more lines can reach your balance. If "a lien, levy, or other encumbrance is placed on your Creator Earnings", OnlyFans may withhold them "until an encumbrance is removed". And it may use your earnings "to set off any harm or loss we suffer as a result of your breach(es) of the Terms of Service."

Tax sits with you. "Creators are responsible for their own Tax affairs", and OnlyFans isn't responsible for advising you on them. If you become tax non-compliant in relation to OnlyFans, it reserves "the right to close, restrict payouts from, or restrict earnings from your account." For your own tax position, our terms of service suggest a qualified professional where you live.

Closing your account doesn't cut off what you're owed. A creator account "will remain open until all active Fan Subscriptions expire. We will then pay all unpaid Creator Earnings and delete the account."

If an agency helps run your page

The Terms expect that some creators have help:

If you are a Creator and someone else assists you with the operation of your Creator account, this does not affect your legal responsibility. Our relationship is with you, and not with any third-party

The fan contract says the same from the other side: "The Fan acknowledges that third parties may assist Creators in operating their accounts and in Creator Interactions." Help running your page is expected, then, and the payout relationship stays between you and OnlyFans. For what that help usually covers day to day, see what an OnlyFans manager does.

That's how it works with Nocturnal, an OnlyFans agency for goth and alt creators. The FAQ on that page asks whether your payouts go through Nocturnal, and the answer is "No. OnlyFans keeps paying you directly, the same as now, and your payouts stay yours." Our terms of service add that your OnlyFans account and your content "belong to you, before, during and after any work with us", and that OnlyFans' own terms "always apply to your use of the platform, whether or not you work with us. Nothing in these terms or in any agreement with us changes them."

The same page says joining is free, and we earn a share of what your page makes. Every split is different. It depends on your page, the platforms you're on and the socials you want run, and we set it with you on the intro call. If you'd like to talk yours through, the apply form commits you to nothing.

OnlyFans can change any of this. The Terms say "We can modify these Terms of Service at any time", so before you rely on a line quoted here, check that the date at the foot of onlyfans.com/terms still reads August 2024.
